Karen Mealey, the farm owner, is a graduate of Virginia Intermont College, with a major in Equine Studies. Karen began her equestrian career when she was eight years old riding ponies and horses in Manchester, Connecticut. She started showing horses and ponies as a child and continued through college showing jumpers on the A circuit. While attending Virginia Intermont, Karen spent her summers with Carol Lush at Maple Side Farm in Pennsylvania starting young Warmbloods and Thoroughbreds and under saddle, as well as furthering the training of the older horses, preparing them for the show ring. After Graduation Karen took a position as an instructor and trainer at Westbrook Hunt Club in Westbrook, Connecticut. Karen has operated her own farm for several years at different locations, before establishing Wonderland Farm in Leland, NC.
Karen teaches the intermediate to advanced rider. The foundation of her teaching method, stresses the form and function of the rider, that are basic principals established by the greats such as George Morris.
When Karen takes on the task of training young horses she closely follows her basic instinct to gently help the horse learn. Her passion for the horse drives her to look through the horse’s eyes, thus helping both horse and rider to work as a unit.
Teaching riding lessons allows Kellie to combine two of her favorite things- teaching and horses! She loves to teach from the ground up and knows that learning to ride is just one of many benefits that students gain from their time in the saddle. Kellie is a teacher for NHCS and currently teaches Kindergarten. She grew up owning and riding horses- competing in 4H, Pony Club, and local horse shows. Her goal is for both the rider and horse to leave the arena feeling successful and ready for their next ride.
Marie has riding experience of over 15 years with a background in showing at places such as WEC, WEF, and Tryon. She grew up in Florida and has had the opportunity to work with and learn from a lengthy list of trainers ensuring to always put safety and the horses well being first in everything she does. She focuses on ensuring that the basics of riding are properly taught and are solidified so that the rider has the best foundation for advancing in their skills.
